Joint Statement for Release:
The Independence Party of Alberta,
The Wildrose Independence Party of Alberta
The Independence Movement Seeks To Unify Under A Single Banner.
Our two parties represent Albertans’ interest in independence from Ottawa. To advance the movement for Alberta independence, we have decided to begin discussions between our respective boards about uniting under one banner.
We feel that recent developments in Ottawa, including concerns about parliamentary practices under the current government and policies affecting Alberta’s sovereignty and economic well-being, represent an existential threat to Alberta. We believe it is time to consider unifying the main independence parties under a single voice. We encourage all Albertans of like mind to join us in that endeavour.
We recognize the Province’s efforts to uphold Alberta’s autonomy regarding natural resources and our sovereignty. For us, this is consistent with our deeply held belief that Alberta’s only remedy to the issues that plague us in confederation is independence.
To prepare for this eventuality, we also recommend the province begins by keeping promises made during the leadership campaign and election, namely:
- Establishment of a Provincial Police Force
- Withdrawal from the Canada Pension Plan, and the creation of an Alberta Pension Plan
- Lastly, we suggest the local collection of all taxes, both federal and provincial, to give Alberta leverage in discussions with Ottawa and to fulfill the mandate from the province on equalization to position the Alberta effectively for future autonomy.
It is important to take these measures promptly to ensure that Alberta is prepared to handle any external pressures from Ottawa or other regions.
